Brava Theater Presents

A West Coast Premiere

SWIMMING WITH LESBIANS

October 6 - October 22, 2023

Brava Theater proudly presents the West Coast Premiere of Marga Gomez’s fourteenth one person show, Swimming With Lesbians.  Gomez’s full steam farce takes place aboard “The Celesbian,” regarded as the most notorious cruise ship on the high seas. Throughout the performance Gomez morphs into a boatload of hilarious queer characters including: Isabelle a disgraced Lacrosse player yearning for her first Lesbian affair, Captain Debbie who is always ready to go down in the ship, and the outwardly jovial but secretly meek bingo caller Pru Perez. When Captain Debbie orders Pru to conduct pool games on the Lezzo Deck things veer off course. Pru discovers her old boarding school bully Arlene on board, circling the pool like a shark. How these intrepid Lesbians navigate through danger, lust and endless buffets is a seafaring tale that will never be told in Florida. The performance runs 65 minutes with no intermission and is recommended for mature audiences.

Swimming With Lesbians will be presented October 6 – October 22, 2023, with Friday, Saturday, Sunday performances. Showtimes are 7:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays and 5:00 pm Sundays at Brava Cabaret, 2773 24th St., San Francisco. Tickets are $25. For more information or to order tickets, the public may visit www.Brava.org

THE CREATIVE TEAM and ORIGIN

Marga Gomez has been subliminally developing Swimming With Lesbians since the 1990’s when she worked as a cruise ship entertainer. Inspired by her fondness for The Poseidon Adventure, Sponge Bob (and Lesbians,) Gomez set out to create thrilling lesbian characters for a theater world in which they have rarely been featured. In the Summer of 2023 “Swimming With Lesbians” enjoyed workshop engagements in San Francisco at The Marsh and in New York at Dixon Place. Joining Marga on her quest is a creative team of esteemed story makers: Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe (Black To The Future) Jackie Marchand (Power Rangers) Sarah Toby Moore (Atomic Comic) Monica Palacios (San Francisco Mi Amor) and David Schweizer (Latin Standards.)

PRESS QUOTES:

“Gomez’s narrator in this story is not defined by her attacks. She’s a ceramics-shattering, pleasure-seeking, curiosity-gratifying observer with quick wit and a sharper tongue. She’s learned how to take herself out of a bad situation. She’s learned how to ask for what she wants.” Lily Janiak, San Francisco Chronicle, 2020

“She’s exceptional at establishing an up close and personal rapport with us, the viewers” Jean Schiffman, San Francisco Examiner, 2020

FOUR SHOWS ONLY CLICK FOR TICKETS

To commemorate 25 years as a solo theater artist Marga Gomez will revive her early 90's show "Memory Tricks" at A.C.T's Costume shop - four shows only. Memory Tricks, set in New York and Paris, is the funny and poignant story of Marga's complicated relationship with her hyper feminine showgirl mother. Memory Tricks remains the most critically acclaimed of her 12 solo plays. Memory Tricks has been presented in San Francisco at The Marsh, Off Broadway at The Public Theater, and internationally at London's ICA, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Montreal's Juste Pour Rire.

Variety 1993
"The autobiographical monologue has been raised to a new level with a new generation or writer performers. Among the best is Marga Gomez... hilarious and moving 'Memory Tricks'"

Frank Rich, New York Times 1993
"funny and touching stage autobiography...I warmly recommend it""

Chicago Reader 1993
"There are two kinds of laughter in the comedy world: the laughter of anesthesia and the laughter of enlightenment. Most stand-up comics aim for anesthesia, dispensing a kind of comedic narcotic to deaden our pain and allow us to deny, however fleetingly, our problems. San Francisco-based monologuist Marga Gomez does something much more difficult in her performances. She takes her most personal foibles and most painful childhood memories and transforms them into a very liberating kind of comedy. In Memory Tricks, for example, she holds up for all the world to see her love-hate relationship with her difficult father (who was a comedian) and her vain, high-strung mother (who was an exotic dancer). Gomez's performances are a kind of spiritual exercise: though they're entertaining--Gomez is a very funny woman--they also provide a kind of psychological road map for self-discovery."
